So, I wound up ripping through the entire season before I even got to leave my midseason comments! What a fun ride.
As soon as the plane crash happened, I was pretty certain that Lydia wasn't dead, but I suspected it was more of a "she'll turn up next season with some sinister plan up her sleeve." I really did NOT expect Lucinda to be holding her! Lucinda is clearly a loon and a half, based on how long this has been going on (considering Houston's captivity, as well). When that episode ended with Lydia seeing Houston, I screamed! I truly thought he was dead and gone. That should make things with Stacey very interesting next season, both in light of her marriage to Marat and his fling with Lydia. I had a feeling it was just a matter of time until those two had sex, considering their situation. I was also glad they didn't escape from Lucinda's clutches in a single scene. It made things more unpredictable and more dire for them. (Although has either of them had a shower lately? Ewwwww.)
Stacey's arc throughout the season was surprising to me. I expected her to be in Russia with Marat when we picked up, though it made sense she didn't go because of what happened at the end of Season 2. It made sense to weave her into the business stuff, since she's the one Rockwell who hasn't really been involved in that. I was pretty shocked when she left Kent for dead, both because it was ruthless and because it seemed kind of dumb of her, LOL. But the way it all spilled out was satisfying. I will admit that I don't entirely buy the love story between her and Marat -- they seem pleasant together, but I feel like I never really saw them fall in love so much as... grow to like each other a bit. Houston's return, whenever it happens, should inject some more stakes into their relationship.
Jarek's death was a true shocker to me! Really did not see that coming at all. I saw the attraction between Lex and Brock -- as Jarek did, haha -- but I really thought he would be an obstacle for them for a long time to come. Very curious where this goes now. Odette's reaction to learning about his death was bizarre, and I know that scene was there for a reason. Did she already know? Is she hiding something? This should be big next season, I'd guess.
I don't mind Mac/Sabine as a pairing, though her duplicity is bound to cause problems. It felt to me like Mac stepped out of the way for Cole/Celeste waaaaaaay too easily, like some good potential drama was squandered there. It might be a function of the binge-reading pace, but it really felt like, aside from some occasional pangs of sadness, he just didn't even mind. And Cole and Celeste felt pretty tasteless just being fully together in front of him right away! I'd have expected them to, like, see each other outside the mansion, not be all over each other at family gatherings, etc, at least for a few months. It made me feel less sympathetic toward them because they seemed pretty selfish, especially in light of the very significant 'gift' Mac was giving them by being okay with it all! Vivian's machinations were fun. I had a suspicion there was a child at play, but I didn't expect the twists to play out as they did, so that was cool. And it's very possible Celeste and Marat will be drawn together as this all plays out and as their individual relationships are challenged.
Congratulations on a very fun season! I love and hate the binging at the same time, because it's exciting to be able to blow through it, but then it's over so fast!

So, I wound up ripping through the entire season before I even got to leave my midseason comments! What a fun ride. Hi Michael! I'm glad you raced through the season so quickly - that is the fun part of releasing the series almost all at once, so people can binge on the series! Ewwwww.) This season was very much an experiment for me in the sense that I didn't actually plan out each episode/story before I started writing it. I had a very big picture of what I wanted to have happen but how it unfolded just happened organically. One of the ideas I always had was for Lucinda to finally act on her words of revenge towards Lydia. I also had the idea of Houston actually being alive and he and Lydia being lovers. How it unfolded, just came to me as I was writing it, but I really did think it was a great twist. I didn't want Lucinda's secret to be revealed quickly because I wanted to set up the fall out from Lydia/Houston being alive. So now, when the truth does come out, Stacey will truly be in a triangle between Houston and Marat, and Houston will have this secret of being lovers with Lydia. (and no, they haven't showered haha). One of the goals I had for this season was for Stacey to really come into her own; I really didn't think she had much of her own arch in the first two seasons, other than her romance with Houston in season 1. So, this season, I really wanted to show that she can be ruthless if push come to shove. Her power trip was a lot of fun to write, I must say. I wanted something major to happen to make her (and Kent and Lex) realize that she was out of control. This part of the arch was actually difficult to write because I had many different ideas of what Stacey could/should do. I finally had this happen and I'm glad that it worked out. I get why the rooting interesting is Houston/Stacey because I did build that up more. Stacey was so fresh from losing Houston when Marat entered the picture, so he was always a shadow over the new couple. That's part of the reason why the Stacey/Houston/Marat triangle will be so great when Houston gets free (if he gets free). Jarek's death was inspired by a scene on Dynasty; Claudia was on a balcony with a baby and she threw it off the ledge. It turned out to just be a doll but the actual baby, but it was so amazing. That's where I got the idea that Jarek could fall from the balcony and die. In my mind, there wasn't much of a redemption for Jarek after he tried to kill Lex and then let his Mom take the fall. For Odette, her reaction will be fully explained next season. You know, the lack of fall out from Mac/Celeste/Cole is one of the things that definitely could have had more fall out - I agree. I think the lack of drama there was generated by the lack of planning of the season. I just sort of wanted Celeste/Mac to be free so Cole/Celeste could deal with the drama of Vivian and Mac could move on with Sabine. The Sabine/Mac story was really fun because it was great to see Sabine sort of get what she always wanted: Lydia's man. How it pans out if/when Lydia is free will be fun. I'm glad you loved Vivian's schemes; she's so fun to write. I had the idea of the child coming back but I wanted to make it even more surprising, so I love the twist that the child she adopted isn't really Celeste's child. I mean, what kind of sick woman tells another woman that she's adopted her child, only to be lying? I love that. Congratulations on a very fun season! I love and hate the binging at the same time, because it's exciting to be able to blow through it, but then it's over so fast! Thanks so much for reading and supporting my series! I'm glad you enjoy it, and I appreciate all of your support! Stay tuned for news about season 4 Dallas
