With the end of the year upon us, it is time to look back and talk about what worked and what didn't on the APN this year. Warning, some of the details below might contain spoilers on recent episodes. Without further ado, my personal choices for the best and worst of 2021.
Best Story
Abby's Pregnancy & the Baby Switch, ODaaT
Abby's pregnancy was a front burner storyline all year on One Day at a Time as she slept with both Andrew and Max, got pregnant and passed the baby off as Andrew's, even though she knew Max was the father. She thought that by telling Andrew she was carrying his child that he would want to have a relationship with her; the opposite, however, happened because Andrew claimed he wasn't ready to be a father. Together, they agreed to give the baby up for adoption and they grew closer as a result. Things shifted, again, when Albertinah returned to town and Andrew reconciled with her, leaving Abby fuming. A fall left her in the hospital and she, then, changed her mind about giving up the baby. Andrew was miffed and told everything to his uncle Vinny, who vowed to help him. When Abby went into labour, Vinny blackmailed a doctor into switching her alive baby with a dead one. The other woman that gave birth to a stillborn child was given Abby's baby. The plot twist is that Lukas and Donovan adopted Abby's son and they are now raising him. The storyline had many twists and turns in it and has now set up lots of future storyline for Andrew, Max, Abby, Lukas, Donovan, Dr. Bryce and Vinny.
Best Couple
RIM aka Robbie & Kim, ODaaT
The reason I picked Robbie & Kim as the best couple is because they shouldn't work, but yet, they do. They have a very complicated history as years earlier, Robbie seduced Kim as a way to get back at Bob for his role in Leah's death. Of course, Robbie, and Natasha, were very against Kim being with their father and even contested Bob's will after he passed away and left Kim with the majority of the estate. This year, however, things shifted when they started to grow closer again, and they ended up in bed together. With Tyler, Natasha, and Greg all worried about this pair, they are likely to have more drama in the future, but they have rooting value.
Worst Couple
Adam & Robin, ODaaT
Two attractive singles should be a sizzling couple, but the reason this pairing doesn't work is because they are always working against each other, and others, to be together. Adam, clearly, still has feelings for Helen, but he is telling himself to be with Robin, who cheated on him in Paris with Shane and got pregnant with his baby. A bout of amnesia after a car accident, put Adam back into Helen's orbit and they had sex only for Adam to then regain his memory and realize he is in love with Robin. When so many things are telling you not to be together, maybe you just shouldn't be! We will see if they can get it together in 2022.
Worst Story
Lukas rapes Craig, ODaaT
The idea of Lukas and Craig having sex on the side of the mountain after the avalanche was inspired by Ryan and Vicki on Another World; I thought the two men aspect would keep this tale fresh, but there were many loop holes. For example, weeks after, Craig was still feeling "sore" from bottoming. In the end, Lukas was arrested but the storyline was wrapped up when Craig asked for a million dollars to drop the charges, meaning Lukas never really paid for his actions. Now, Lukas and Donovan never mention Craig or what happened on the mountain. Let's hope baby Olly never asks what happened on the ski hill either.
Best Psycho
Cassie, ODaaT
Cassie had a busy year plotting against everyone in Twin Peaks by pitting Roboto and Robertson Enterprises against one another, but she was also determined to get back together with Jacob, who had left her jilted at the altar the previous year. Jacob, however, had moved on with Paige and proposed to his new girlfriend. Cassie learned that Jacob and Paige were going to elope and followed them to Canada, where she tried to kill them as she felt like if she couldn't have Jacob, then no one could. Max saved them and Cassie was presumed dead, but we hope that she doesn't stay away too long because Twin Peaks is more fun when Cassie is around.
Best Plot Twist
Max saves Jacob & Paige from Cassie, ODaaT
The reason I gave this the best plot twist is because leading up to the events in Banff, Max had been working with Cassie to try to break up Paige and Jacob, so it was fitting that he saved them from Cassie's sick plot to kill them. Max, now, has set himself as being a hero, even though he still has an edge. Will this new side of Max be the thing that brings him and Paige closer together? Time will only tell ...
Best Mystery
Who Shot Nathan?, Chasing Diamonds
When Nathan ended up with a couple of bullets in his chest, we were all wondering who shot him. The suspect list was long as Mac, Lydia, Lucinda, Dane, Sabine, Cole, Stacey and Lex could have been the one to have shot him. In the hospital, Nathan claimed that it was Mac that shot him, so his brother was put in jail and on trial for attempted murder. In the end, however, it was revealed that Carmen was the one who shot him since Nathan was unpleased about her marriage to Slate. The mystery kept us guessing and wondering who the real shooter was up until the very end.
Worst Plot Twist
Cassie is alive, ODaaT
Towards the end of the year, Max went back to Banff after Cassie's will left him a cryptic note. Once he returned to Canada, he was "stunned" to see that his mother, Cassie, was alive as she was presumed dead in a plane crash while she was trying to escape. The reason this twist was shocking is because whenever no bodies are found on soaps, it generally means that the person will turn up again. If anything, the twist is that it didn't take long for Cassie to reappear.
Best Triangle
Stacey / Kent / Lydia, Chasing Diamonds
This tale was a classic soap tale of a mother and daughter fighting over the same man, with Lydia and Stacey both vying for the affections of Kent. Kent and Lydia have a long history, which Lydia was using to her advantage while he had an undeniable chemistry with Stacey. The family dynamics were at an all time high as Stacey had Kent's child, but she also had a child with Kent's son, Houston. In the end, it seemed like Kent and Stacey were going to try to have a relationship, even if it was unconventional, but the build up to that was very exciting.
Most Preposterous Plot
Sabine's Pregnancy, Chasing Diamonds
The reason this got the most preposterous plot is because a woman of Sabine's age would have, likely, had more difficulty getting pregnant, yet another wondering if either Mac or Nathan was the father of the child. In the end, she suffered a miscarriage, which is probably for the best since she also became a grandmother around the same time that she discovered she was pregnant.
Best Rivalry
Mac vs. Nathan, Chasing Diamonds
Two brothers going head to head over family dynamics, business and women is always good drama. Nathan returned to town and immediately set his sights on having everything that Mac had. Slowly, he was able to take everything that Mac loved away from him: being CEO of Rockwell Mining, head of the family, the Rockwell Mansion and, to some extent, Sabine. They went back and forth until Nathan was shot and left for dead. But it didn't end there was Nathan falsely accused Mac of being the one who shot him. Brotherly love at it's best.
Best Location
Paris, France; ODaaT
One Day at a Time has taken us to different locations over the years, and this year was no different as we had a week long trip to Paris, France. Helen surprised Adam in Paris and confessed her love to him; Adam, was supposed to meet Robin at the Eiffel Tower, but was late as a result. Robin thought that Adam stood her up and she ended up in bed with Shane! The city of lights left us wanting more drama!
Fun Twist
Cole does drag, Chasing Diamonds
To try to get information on how Nathan was running Rockwell Mining, Cole dressed up in a fat suit and called himself Richard Coleman. As Richard, Cole got hired and did some snooping for Mac. In the end, it was Celeste who figured out his real identity but it was a fun way for Cole to stay present at the company and try to help his father.
