Today, I released the 500th episode of One Day at a Time! I almost can’t believe that I have released 500 episodes of my series.
When I first created One Day at a Time in 1994 and then started writing it in 1995, I never thought that I would end up releasing on-line and, how have released 500 episodes. It is a little bit surreal in a lot of ways. One of the neat things, as I showed last year during the 15h anniversary year is that a lot of my original stories/ideas have unfolded during the online version. Obviously as time as moved on, I’ve gone further and further away from the original writings but it is still neat to read my original readings and know where the various storylines happened in the online series.
Since I had my hiatus beginning in mid-2004 and lasted until early 2009, I am only now hitting 500 episodes. Had I not taken 4 ½ years off, it is kinda crazy to think how many more episodes I could have released. I’ve said this before, but one of the aspects that I am super proud of is how consistent I have been since returning to releasing the series to the web in 2009. I think I brought the series back around episodes 53 or 54; so in 9 ½ years, I’ve released 450ish episodes, which is an average of like 47 episodes per year – which for a webseries, is a lot!
Usually on these milestone blogs, I do highs & lows, but I won’t do that this type. I’ve said in the past a lot of my favorite storylines and some of my least favorites, and we are very close to the end of the year, so you’ll soon get my annual highs & lows from 2018. I will just say that at the start of the year I mentioned that 2018 was a dark year, and I still feel that way … with the Ice Storm, Dawn’s storyline, the end of the 500th episode … while it’s all been dramatic, it has a darker feel to it for sure but I will get into this later at the end of the year. I will also state that while planning this year, the 500th kind of snuck up on me. Usually, I do daily episodes leading up to this kind of event, but when I realized it was 500, I would have to rework many things, and decided to just it be as it is.
I still have so many great ideas in my head for these characters, whom have been with me since I’ve been 12 years old, which is over half of my young adult life. These characters have seen me through high school, college, coming out, starting my career, getting married, buying a house and travelling the world. Interestingly enough, some of my travels have actually inspired events on the series. For example, I’ve visited Santa Barbara a couple of times now, and it is one of my favorite “close” places to go to; in 2017 I did an entire arch in Santa Barbara! Coming up on the series, I’m taking some characters to Paris, which is another one of my favorite places in the world. These characters and this town are literally a part of me and I love putting them in various situations and seeing what their reactions are. Of course, the situations are dramatic because it is a soap opera but that is the fun part of writing this style.
I do want to take a moment to thank anyone who has ever read any episode of ODaaT; your readership and if you’ve ever left me any kind of feedback has been so very appreciated, whether positive or negative. It helps me grow as a writer and makes me want to either continue to do good things or improve. So, thank you, truly! And, hopefully I can get out another 500 episodes.
What have been your favorite moments over the last 16 years & 500 episodes?
Sound off!
Until next time,
