NOTE: Below has spoilers, if you haven't read the 800th episode, proceed with caution. **
Well, I just released the 800th episode of One Day at a Time. It is hard to believe that I have had that many episodes of the series that I created when I was 10 years old, but here we are!
Like the previous milestone episodes, I wanted something major to happen in the 800th. Coming into the 2022 season, I knew that it was ODaaT's 20th anniversary of being online, so I wanted some major storylines to happen to go with the anniversary season. A few years ago, I was really heavily inspired by Footprints and the Footprint killer storyline, and it made me realize that I hadn't done a serial killer story on ODaaT, which is when I decided to do it for the 20th anniversary. Of course, the story started last November when Shelley died, and it ramped up on New Year's with Trenyce's attach and Brad's death. Before the reveal of the killer, I wanted another death, which came this week with Albertinah. At the end of the 800th, it was revealed that the killer is Brooke Lawson!
Of course, we will see the reasons behind Brooke being the killer in upcoming episodes, but I wanted the killer to be a main cast member. I really hate when the serial killer turns up being a day player or a character that no one really cares about, which is where Brooke came in. The other task was to give motivation for the killings; I didn't want it to be random killings, so we will get to the reasoning of WHY Brooke has turned to stabbing people.
Part of what I was inspired by on Footprints, is that the Footprint killer gave reference to the title of the series. A rose has always been the ODaaT logo, so that's when I came up with the idea of rose peddles being sprinkled over top of the bodies; it pays respect to the series and also adds a layer of creepiness to the killings!
Then I had to look at the cast, which I already felt had become inflated, and decide which would die. Once I had the motivation behind Brooke's killings, the victim's become easy. I couldn't kill Trenyce, however, because she is still driving storyline, whereas Brad was sort of stale in his current situation. And now that the audience knows it is Brooke, not only will you find out motivation, but it is fun to let the audience in on the secret while the rest of the cast is still in the dark about the killer's identity. The question becomes, will someone else die before everyone realizes that the killer is Brooke?
What did you think of the reveal? How do you like the RPK storyline? What are some of your favorite moments from the last 800 episodes?
Sound off below!
